Soft Tissue (Gum) Graft
Receding gums and exposed tooth roots can radically affect the appearance of a person’s smile. Exposed roots can also be very sensitive to hot or cold foods and liquids. CharlottePerio offers a soft tissue (gum) graft procedure to repair the defect and thus help prevent additional bone loss and stop the gums from receding further.
Gum grafts can be used to cover roots or develop gum tissue. During this procedure, your periodontist takes gum tissue from your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed root. This can be done for one tooth or several teeth to even your gum line and reduce sensitivity.
Gingival (Gum) Recontouring and Crown Lengthening
Gum recontouring, also known as crown lengthening, is performed to treat a “gummy” or uneven smile by adjusting the gum line and surrounding bone to reveal more of the healthy tooth surface. This creates symmetry and a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. The procedure can be done on one or multiple teeth.
Crown lengthening is often part of a treatment plan for placing a dental crown. It provides the necessary space between the bone and crown, preventing damage to the gum tissue. It may also be recommended to restore a tooth that is decayed, fractured, or worn below the gum line by exposing more of the tooth for restoration.
